In this video, our Council member John Palmer and Senior Research Fellow Dr Andrew Blick discuss the threats to the internal cohesion of the United Kingdom arising from Brexit and Covid-19. They believe in particular that it will be difficult to avoid holding a second referendum on independence for Scotland. If such a referendum led to Scottish independence, Northern Ireland and perhaps even Wales would be likely to follow their example:

 

John Palmer is a Council Member of the Federal Trust and visiting practitioner fellow at Sussex University’s European Institute. He was previously European editor of the Guardian and political director of the European Policy Centre in Brussels.

Dr Andrew Blick is a senior research fellow at the Federal Trust as well as Reader in Politics and Contemporary History and Head of the Department of Political Economy, King’s College London.
